It's important for your young ones to get proper dental care so that it becomes an important part of their healthy attitude for the rest of their lives.

Babies will start getting teeth as early as their first year of life. Cavities on baby teeth may need to be treated because letting the cavities get large can cause mouth infections which can lead to very unhappy babies which in turn lead to unhappy mommies and daddies. As well, baby teeth with large cavities can harm the adult teeth that are growing underneath them. Dr. Yu recommends early checks on baby teeth.

Kids from as early as 6 years old will start to lose their baby teeth and monitoring how the adult teeth grow in at this stage is important to ensuring that the adult teeth are healthy and remain healthy. When the adult teeth first come in the mouth, they are very vulnerable to cavities since the enamel may yet to be fully mineralized or matured.

Teens need about the most guidance of all because of their busy lives and often care-free attitudes. Because “looks” are very important to this age group, suggesting that they maintain good oral hygiene which will lead to a healthy and better smile may be the motivation teens need to keep up with their brushing and dental appointments.

There are a lot of patients between the ages of 20 and 30 that need some immediate attention to their teeth. This is in part due to the fact that this age group enters college, university or the work force. They feel more independent and think they are “healthy” and somewhat immune to decay. Often times oral hygiene habits deteriorate and there may also be a lapse in sufficient dental coverage for these individuals and this could also prove costly in the long run. Prevention as always is key with this group.

Adults over the age of 30 are likely experiencing more stress than in any other time of their lives. The pressure of raising families and creating financial stability can result in stress and the grinding of teeth, or bruxism. Even though this is VERY common amongst adults, it is often untreated because people simply do not believe they do it. It is often a subconscious reaction and occurs during sleep. The chipping of teeth, broken fillings, sensitive teeth and uneven teeth are often the result. There are ways to reduce these forces and save your teeth from undue wear.

The most effective electric brush is no better at reducing plaque than a hand held toothbrush for most people, but for those with failing dexterity electric brushes may make a difference.
